Essay Writing
Essay Paper for UPSC Mains — Structure, Style and Marks-Winning Techniques
Why the Essay Paper Is a Game Changer
Most UPSC toppers credit their Essay paper as their best-performing paper. Unlike GS, where there is a ceiling on how much you can write in the answer book, the Essay is a full 3-hour, two-essay paper with the highest potential for differentiation.
Understanding What Examiners Want
UPSC essay examiners are looking for:
- Multi-dimensionality: Can you look at the topic from social, economic, political, philosophical and historical angles?
- Balance: Are you presenting both sides before arriving at a nuanced conclusion?
- Original thought: Are you bringing your own analytical voice, or just reproducing textbook content?
- Language: Clear, precise and elegant — not flowery or verbose.
A Proven Essay Structure
- Introduction (150–200 words): Hook with a quote, fact or anecdote. Define key terms. State the scope.
- Body (800–1000 words): 4–6 paragraphs, each with a clear argument + example + analysis. Move from historical → contemporary → future.
- Conclusion (150–200 words): Synthesise — do not introduce new points. End with an aspirational or philosophical note.
Practice Schedule
Write at least one full essay every week from month 6 onwards. Time yourself strictly to 90 minutes per essay. Get it reviewed by a mentor or fellow aspirant. Read essays by Arun Kumar (IAS), UPSC toppers' essay compilations and quality editorials to sharpen your writing.
A well-crafted 1200-word essay can score 130+. A padded 1800-word essay rarely crosses 110. Quality over quantity — always.
