CSAT Paper 2 — How to Score 100+ Without a Mathematics Background
Do Not Underestimate CSAT
Every year, hundreds of aspirants who are well-prepared for GS land on the CSAT cut-off risk list. Many fail this paper despite knowing their static syllabus well. CSAT requires a different kind of preparation.
Understanding the Pattern
CSAT consists of 80 questions in 2 hours. It has:
- Reading Comprehension (~20–25 questions)
- Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability (~25 questions)
- Basic Numeracy & Data Interpretation (~20 questions)
- English Language Comprehension (~10 questions)
The qualifying mark is 33% — which is 66 marks out of 200. Negative marking applies (1/3 deducted).
Strategy for Arts Students
Comprehension is your biggest asset. With practice, you can score 90%+ on reading comprehension and English language questions. These alone can qualify you well above the cut-off.
For numeracy, focus only on high-frequency topics: percentages, ratios, averages, time-speed-distance, simple data interpretation. Ignore complex topics like permutations/combinations and advanced algebra.
Practice Plan
- Attempt 2 previous CSAT papers every week from October onwards
- Review every wrong answer — identify the reasoning pattern, not just the answer
- Time yourself strictly — 80 questions in 120 minutes means 90 seconds per question
The goal is not 120 marks — it is just 66. Plan accordingly and do not waste GS preparation time on CSAT overkill.
